SZ Residence – Los Angeles, CA USA

A large house on a restrictive site, placed with care to achieve privacy while maximizing exterior space and views to the canyon, the mass of the building is divided into two offset bars which slide past one another. A glazed circulation core sits between the masses and visually connects the entry garden to an intimate private garden at the opposite end.

Located within the aesthetically restrictive Mulholland Scenic Corridor, the home is screened with trees on the street side, while utilizing a vegetated flat roof to blend in with the native plants when viewed by adjacent homes at higher elevations in the canyon.

The home uses passive heating and cooling, rainwater collection, photo-voltaic solar panels, low water use landscaping, FSC certified wood flooring, bamboo casework and low VOC paints.

All photos taken by Scott M B Gustafson in late 2010 as the home was nearing completion. Please excuse the blue tape that indicated where the work required touch up by the craftsmen.
