In 2005, while a member of the design agency softfirm, The Pitch asked me to design the artwork for their new album “The Back Of My Burning Hand”. The lead singer and principal songwriter, Ryan Lee, has been a great friend of mine since 7th grade and I was already a big fan of their music so I happily accepted their commission.
The Pitch was commissioning an artist to create a painting for the cover because they were so impressed with her previous artwork. They also had some film developed that went through an airport scanner and were intrigued by the patterns that appeared on the devolved images. Working from an initial mockup of the final painting, I selected colors to overlay on the disrupted film. In the end the painting turned out not to be so good and The Pitch and I decided to use another photo from the roll as the cover for the album. I believe we made the right choice.
