The Farnsworth House

Last month I visited Mies Van der Rohe’s master work, the Farnsworth House in Plano, IL while I was in the Chicago area for my cousin’s wedding. Though I grew up in northern Illinois, I never was able to visit the house before. It had been in private hands until it was taken over by the National Trust for Historic Preservation a few years ago.

Gently sited adjacent the Fox River, I can imagine how lovely it would be spend hours alone or in close company watching the sun set, the snow fall and the days pass by. Plano isn’t as rural as it used to be, and I disklike the term “glamping” but the home is the ultimate framework for meditative repose to escape the pressures of the city. My brother and I were only able to spend an hour or so in the house and on the grounds during our tour, but I hope I can return again many times in the future to experience the subtle nuances of this spectacular building.
